| -l | Ce paramètre permet d'enlever un niveau de résultat de recherche (seulement le niveau RPSL). |
| -L | Ce paramètre permet de rechercher toutes les informations moins spécifiques. |
| -m | Ce paramètre permet de rechercher toutes les informations de premier niveau moins spécifiques. |
| -p port | Ce paramètre permet de se connecter au port de serveur spécifié. |
| identifier | Ce paramètre permet d'indiquer le nom ou l'hôte à identifier. |

Description
Cette commande permet d'afficher les informations du répertoire de service à propos d'un nom d'utilisateur sur Internet.
Remarque
- Plusieurs variantes de cette commande existe selon les distributions Linux, ainsi, la version proposé avec les distributions Debian de Marco d'Itri est complètement différente de celle proposé avec RHEL (jwhois) de Jonas berg.
Installation
La commande suivante permet d'installer la commande whois sous CentOS 6 :
